Europe’s main ice hockey clubs, their leagues and the IIHF have initiated a joint venture with the objective of launching a premium European club competition starting in season 2014/2015. The joint steering group has today issued an Invitation-To-Tender (ITT) for the commercial rights to the competition.
One year ago, all stakeholders in European ice hockey gathered in Barcelona, Spain for the Hockey Forum with the prime objective to “find a common plan which shall lay the foundation for a competitively and commercially viable top European club competition starting 2014/2015”.
Coming out of the Hockey Forum and the motto “Together”, the relevant stakeholders formed working groups with the mandate to create a proposal for an annual tournament which assumed the working name “European Club Competition” or ECC, while coordinating this into an international calendar which accommodates both national team programs and the club competition.
The three main stakeholders – Europe’s top professional clubs, their leagues and the IIHF (including its member national associations) – devoted almost one year to finalizing the proposals, while keeping in focus the planned launch in autumn 2014.
The stakeholders are now in the process of forming a shareholder company, where the clubs will be the majority shareholders.
“This has been a unique process of cooperation in the history of European hockey,” says Timo Everi, the chairman of Finnish league club IFK Helsinki and also a member of the board of the European Trophy, the competition with 32 of Europe’s top clubs.
“We have a come a long way, there is still lot of work to be done, but we have reached a stage where we are confident issuing this invitation to tender.”
Hockey Europe, the union of Europe’s top professional hockey leagues, has been an integral partner in the process.
“Just like in other major team sports, the leagues and their clubs benefit from European competition,” says Gernot Tripcke, the General Manager of the German DEL league and board member of Hockey Europe. “It develops the game and helps the clubs to reach the next level, just as it has been the case in football, basketball and handball.”
IIHF Vice President Kalervo Kummola was the chairman of the “Barcelona Coordination Working Group” which oversaw the entire process:
“When we met for the first time one year ago, nobody could really tell in which direction this would develop,” says Kummola. “But it also goes to show how much you can accomplish if you work together towards a common goal.”
“We are excited to be able to invite potential tenders to bid for the commercial rights to our European club competition.”
Requests from bona-fide Bidders to obtain the ITT or for clarification and/or further information relating to its ITT must be marked for the attention of Timo Everi and/or Szymon Szemberg and received via:

Principaux clubs de hockey sur glace d'Europe, leurs ligues et l'IIHF ont lancé une coentreprise avec l'objectif de lancer une compétition de clubs européenne prime à partir de la saison 2014/2015. Le groupe de pilotage conjoint a aujourd'hui publié un appel d'offres aux (ITT) pour les droits commerciaux de la compétition.
Il ya un an, tous les acteurs de hockey sur glace européens se sont réunis à Barcelone, Espagne pour le Forum de hockey avec l'objectif premier de «trouver un plan commun qui doit jeter les bases d'une compétition de haut de club compétitif et commercialement viable européen départ 2014/2015".
En sortant du Forum hockey et le slogan «Ensemble», les parties prenantes ont formé des groupes de travail ayant pour mandat de créer une proposition pour un tournoi annuel qui a pris le nom de «compétition de clubs européenne" de travail ou ECC, tout en coordonnant ce dans un calendrier international qui accueille les programmes des équipes nationales et la compétition de club.
Les trois principaux acteurs - les meilleurs clubs professionnels en Europe, leurs ligues et de l'IIHF (y compris ses associations nationales membres) - consacrées presque un an pour finaliser les propositions, tout en gardant à concentrer le lancement prévu à l'automne 2014.
Les intervenants sont en train de former une société actionnaire, dont les clubs seront les actionnaires majoritaires.
"Cela a été un processus unique de coopération dans l'histoire du hockey européen», explique Timo Everi, le président du finnois League Club IFK Helsinki et également membre du conseil d'administration de l'European Trophy, la compétition avec 32 des meilleurs clubs d'Europe.
«Nous avons une parcouru un long chemin, il ya encore beaucoup de travail à faire, mais nous avons atteint un stade où nous sommes confiants délivrance présent appel d'offres."
Hockey Europe, l'Union des meilleures ligues de hockey professionnel en Europe, a été un partenaire essentiel dans le processus.
"Tout comme dans les autres grands sports d'équipe, les ligues et leurs clubs bénéficient de la concurrence européenne», explique Gernot Tripcke, le directeur général de la ligue DEL allemande et membre du conseil de l'Europe de Hockey. »Il développe le jeu et aide les clubs à atteindre le niveau suivant, tout comme cela a été le cas dans le football, le basket-ball et le handball."
IIHF vice-président Kalervo Kummola était le président du "Groupe de travail de coordination de Barcelone», qui a supervisé l'ensemble du processus:
«Quand nous nous sommes rencontrés pour la première fois il ya un an, personne ne pouvait vraiment dire dans quelle direction cela développer», explique Kummola. "Mais il va aussi montrer combien vous pouvez accomplir si vous travaillez ensemble vers un but commun."
«Nous sommes ravis d'être en mesure d'inviter des offres potentielles d'offres pour les droits de commercialisation de notre compétition européenne de club."
